Hannover defeat Hamburg to move top of Bundesliga

Newly promoted Hannover climbed to the top of the Bundesliga table with a 2-0 win over Hamburg on Friday night.

Martin Harnik struck the opener early in the second half and Ihlas Bebou added the second late on for the impressive newcomers.

The three points mean Hannover extend their current unbeaten run to 16 games and move top - until Sunday at least - for the first time in 48 years.

In-form Austrian Harnik opened the scoring when he pounced to poke home after Niclas Fullkrug headed the ball across the Hamburg goal.

Hamburg were struggling without the pace and movement of US striker Bobby Wood, who was absent because of a knee injury.

And substitute Bebou doubled his side's advantage in the 82nd minute when he fired home after Hamburg keeper Christian Mathenia could only parry Felix Klaus' initial shot.
