Oldham Athletic 2-3 Burton Albion

Burton survived a scare in the first round of the Carabao Cup as they won 3-2 at Oldham. The Brewers were trailing their League One opponents midway through the second half but completed their comeback with a late penalty from Lucas Akins.Despite making eight changes to the team which started Saturday's Championship defeat against Cardiff, Burton went close to an early opener as Luke Varney's drive was saved by home keeper Ben Wilson.Oldham's first opportunity came on 35 minutes, with Aaron Amadi-Holloway bringing a fingertip save from Burton's debutant keeper Connor Ripley.Amadi-Holloway was inches away from making the breakthrough before half-time, but his glancing header from Anthony Gerrard's cross came back off a post.Burton were gifted the lead after 47 minutes when Oldham midfielder Ousmane Fane played a weak back-pass and Varney intercepted before slotting past Wilson.Oldham levelled eight minutes later as Paul Green's left-wing free-kick eluded a mass of bodies, including keeper Ripley, and bounced straight inside the far post. The Latics then went ahead with a 67th-minute penalty, drilled into the bottom corner by Craig Davies after Ryan McLaughlin was bundled over by Ben Fox.But there was another quick equaliser - this time within two minutes - when Burton substitute Matt Lund met Joe Sbarra's cross and swept home from 10 yards.Albion settled an entertaining tie in the 86th minute as McLaughlin fouled Damien McCrory just inside the box and Akins stepped up to convert the decisive penalty.Oldham could have forced extra time, only for Peter Clarke's header to hit the woodwork late on.ends
