FC Dallas cruises past Rapids into U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals

U.S. Open Cup holders FC Dallas advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over the Colorado Rapids on Tuesday night.

Mauro Diaz drew a penalty just before halftime and dispatched it himself to give FC Dallas the lead, but Colorado equalized through halftime substitue Michael Azira in his first minute on the pitch.

Ryan Hollingshead's tap-in in the 57th minute put Dallas back in front, and Colorado had little chance to get back in the game after going down to nine men.

First Shkelzen Gashi left with an injury after all subs had been used, and then Kortne Ford was sent off in the 88th minute -- just before Dallas' Javier Morales sealed the win with a strike from a free kick.

Dallas will face the winner of Wednesday's game between Sporting Kansas City and Houston Dynamo in the quarterfinals next month.
