Feyenoord beat Vitesse 4-2 on penalties to win the Dutch Super Cup on Saturday, in a match that featured a bizarre sequence of events involving the Video Assistant Referee.

The match finished 1-1 in regular time, with Jens Toornstra sending Feyenoord ahead inside the first 10 minutes before Vitesse equalised just after half-time in controversial circumstances.

After Vitesse midfielder Karim El Ahmadi appeared to be fouled in the box by Feyenoord's Tim Matavz, the referee waved play on and allowed the reigning Eredivisie champions to counter-attack and seemingly score themselves through Nicolai Jorgensen.

Referee Danny Makkelie then sought clarification from the VAR and, after almost a minute's worth of consultation, finally awarded Vitesse a penalty, ruling out Feyenoord's goal. Vitesse then drew level from the spot.

Feyenoord, however, would eventually triumph in the shootout thanks to Australian goalkeeper Brad Jones. The 35-year-old saved Matavz's and Milot Rashica's shots to ensure Feyenoord lifted the Johan Cruyff Shield.
