Independiente del Valle complete shock Copa Lib upset of Boca Juniors

Independiente del Valle completed their shock upset of Boca Juniors in the Copa Libertadores semifinal, winning 3-2 on the night and 5-3 on aggregate to advance to the final.

Trailing from the first leg, Boca got just the start they needed in the fourth minute when Cristian Pavon latched onto a Frank Fabra cross and poked home past Independiente goalkeeper Librado Azcona to give his team a 1-0 lead.

The opener rattled Independiente, and the Argentine giants seemed to sense it and continued to press hard for a second goal. Carlos Tevez nearly set up teammate Nicolas Lodeiro in the 11th minute, only for his pass to be cleared away.

Against the run of play, Independiente found an important leveller from a corner kick, when sloppy marking left Luis Caicedo wide open in the centre of the penalty area for the Independiente defender to bury a left-footed shot past Agustín Orion.

Boca finished the first half with a flurry, hitting the post with a close-range attempt and then twice forcing saves from Azcona, who looked shaky throughout the first 45 minutes.

The tie was turned further on its head less than five minutes into the second half when first-leg hero Bryan Cabezas got behind the Boca defence from a skipped header and calmly found the back of the net.

With Boca needing three goals to pull back ahead because of Del Valle's two away goals, a massive blunder at the back from the Argentines essentially ended the match and the tie.

Orion tried to play a pass to one of his defender, but an onrushing Julio Angulo disrupted the play and his first touch rolled towards the empty goal and in to make it 5-2 on aggregate for the Ecuadorian side.

With full-time approaching, Pavon got his second of the night, striking from distance to beat Azcona, but the tie was out of reach and time expired soon after.

Independiente del Valle will play Atletico Nacional in the two-legged final starting on July 20, after the Colombian side beat Sao Paulo 4-1 on aggregate in the other semifinal.
