Faroe Islands 0-0 Hungary

The Faroe Islands were inches away from claiming a memorable win over Hungary in their opening World Cup qualifier before having to settle for what was still a creditable goalless draw.

With less than five minutes to go in the clash in Torshavn Faroes playmaker Hallur Hansson could have won it for the underdogs, but saw his left-footed shot hit a post.

Hungary, who will be hoping to challenge Portugal and Switzerland for a top-two finish in Group B, also pushed for a late winner, but home goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen denied Zoltan Stieber and Akos Elek fired just over.

Neither side could find a clincher to leave the Faroes - sitting 116 places lower than 19th-placed Hungary in the FIFA world rankings - celebrating their best start to a qualifying campaign since 2002.
