Tigres beat Internacional, set to face River Plate in Copa Libertadores final

MONTERREY, Mexico -- Tigres of Mexico defeated Brazilian side Internacional 3-1 on Wednesday to advance to the Copa Libertadores final for the first time.

The Mexican club erased a 2-1 loss in the first leg last week in Brazil, advancing 4-3 on aggregate to secure a spot in the final against River Plate of Argentina.

French striker Andre Gignac opened the scoring for Tigres in the 18th minute, Internacional defender Geferson scored an own goal in the 41st and midfielder Arevalo Rios sealed the victory in the 56th at a packed Estadio Universitario in Monterrey.

Argentine forward Lisandro Lopez scored Inter's lone goal in the 89th.

Internacional, a two-time Copa Libertadores champion, was trying to make it to the final of Latin America's most important club competition for the first time since winning the title in 2010.

River Plate, the Copa winner in 1986 and 1996, returned to the final for the first time in 19 years after eliminating Guarani of Paraguay 3-1 on aggregate. It won 2-0 at home and drew 1-1 in the second leg in Paraguay on Tuesday.
