Romania 1-0 Faroe Islands

A single goal from Claudiu Keseru was enough for Romania to see off the Faroe Islands and remain top of European Championship qualifying Group F.

The Al-Gharafa forward struck in the 20th minute and though there were other opportunities for the home team, an improved Faroes defence restricted them to a 1-0 scoreline.

Romania thus remain a point ahead of Northern Ireland at the group summit after four games.

Faroes keeper Gunnar Nielsen had to save from Raul Rusescu and Claudiu Keseru in the first six minutes and it looked like being a long 90 minutes for one of football's traditional minnows.

They have been newly competitive in this campaign, though, and Brandur Olsen attempted to give them a shock lead with a 25-yard free-kick which flashed wide.

Romania's opener came after 20 minutes, though it was a messy affair. Alexandru Maxim's free-kick was deflected against the right-hand post and Keseru followed in to bundled the ball home from a couple of yards.

Defender Paul Papp hammered a 20-yard effort over the bar but otherwise it was all quiet up until the interval.

There was little goalmouth action early in the second period either, though Neilsen parried another Maxim free-kick just after the hour mark.

Keseru thrashed another set-piece well over the bar and Maxim saw a curled effort superbly saved by Nielsen, whose defence held firm.
