Wolfsburg regained second spot from Borussia Monchengladbach and left Paderborn inside the bottom two with a 3-1 win in East Westphalia. Timm Klose's first goal for Wolfsburg got Dieter Hecking's men on their way with Bas Dost bagging a brace as the Wolves responded to Gladbach's win over Leverkusen on Saturday by moving back up to second, and securing their place in the Champions League group stage next season. Lukas Rupp scored a late consolation, but with two games of the season left, Paderborn are just a point off the foot of the table, a position occupied by Stuttgart - their guests on the final day of the season. It could have been a completely different story at the Paderborn Arena had Rupp not missed a glorious opportunity to give the hosts the lead early on. Faced with only Diego Benaglio to beat, he contrived to flash his shot wide of the right-hand post just as the home fans were preparing to celebrate. Instead, they were stunned to silence when Klose headed in a corner to put Wolfsburg in front, although it took a while before the referee ultimately gave the goal. The linesman's flag had been raised, but Luiz Gustavo was adjudged not to have been interfering with play as the ball nestled inside the far post without any intervention from the Brazilian. Paderborn capitulated and Dost added a second from close range from Ivan Perisic's pinpoint pass. The hosts tried to muster a recovery in the second half, spending long spells in possession, albeit without making any noteworthy progress. Dost ended any hopes they may have had of getting back into the game when he bagged his 16th of the season, turning the ball in at the far post after Maximilian Arnold's effort was only parried. Rupp did get his goal late on with a sweet volley into the roof of the net, but it was too little too late with his most important chance early in the game the one he needed to score.
