Inter warm up for Champions League final with win to end Serie A season

Champions League finalists Inter Milan wrapped up their Serie A season on Saturday with a 1-0 win at Torino thanks to a first-half goal by Marcelo Brozovic, a result which guaranteed them a top-three finish.

Inter, who have 72 points, will find out later on Saturday whether they will finish second or third as Lazio are one point adrift before their match at Empoli.

Simone Inzaghi's side have 11 wins from their last 12 matches in all competitions and head into the Champions League final against Manchester City in Istanbul next Saturday with confidence.

Inter have already secured back-to-back victories in the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana this season.

"It is thanks to the victories but also learning from a few defeats that we put ourselves in this position." Inzaghi said to DAZN.

"I wanted to win today because we owe it to our club and our fans, we wanted to improve our position in the table.

"Now we have this great dream of the Champions League, we go there to play our best against a side with immense quality."

Brozovic scored for the visitors eight minutes before the interval. He unleashed a shot from outside the box, taking advantage of the ample space provided by the Torino defence.

On the hour mark, Torino had a golden chance to equalise when Yann Karamoh attempted a shot from an acute angle. However, 38-year-old goalkeeper Samir Handanovic made a diving save, managing to get a hand on the ball.

"We are in good shape, even if it was the last game of the Serie A season, we wanted to end well and put quality on to the pitch. We were always in control and deserved the victory," Handanovic told DAZN.

During the latter part of the match, substitute Inter keeper Alex Cordaz demonstrated his enduring skills, despite having not played a game for more than a year, by making a superb reaction save from a six-yard shot.

Torino seemed to lack the energy and motivation to make a final push, with the match fizzling out.

In stoppage time, Antonio Sanabria had a chance to secure a point for the hosts but the unchallenged forward failed to convert the tap-in from close range.

"We wanted to honour the season all the way. Torino are a team who really cause you problems and make it difficult to play against," Inzaghi said.
