Ten-man Wolves come back through Joao Gomes winner to stun Southampton

Ten-man Wolverhampton came from a goal down to claim a valuable 2-1 victory at Premier League bottom club Southampton with debutant Joao Gomes scoring late on Saturday.

Wolves were trailing to Carlos Alcaraz's first-half opener and had Mario Lemina sent off in the 27th minute.

But they levelled through Jan Bednarek's 72nd minute own goal and Gomes struck in the 87th minute.

Southampton remain rooted to the foot of the table with 15 points while Wolves are on the rise and have 23, five points clear of the relegation zone.

Argentina international Alcaraz produced a sweet strike for his first Southampton goal, his shot going in off the post.

Former Southampton player Lemina then stupidly got himself a second yellow card for dissent as he argued about a free kick.

Wolves were rewarded for their positivity after the break though as Adama Traore came off the bench.

It was Traore's shot that was bundled into his own goal by Bednarek as the mood turned dark at St Mary's Stadium.

Wolves sensed their moment and substitute Gomes fired home to complete the turnaround.

"Massive win. Fantastic win and a fantastic character of the team. That was a team win," Wolves' Ruben Neves said.

Boos greeted the final whistle as the home fans let their feelings be known.
