Pepi scores but PSV let lead slip against Atlético Madrid

Atlético Madrid held off PSV Eindhoven to win an incident-packed Champions League clash 3-2.

Guus Til gave PSV an early lead but Julián Álvarez equalised before halftime.

Quickfire goals from Dávid Hancko and Alexander Sørloth proved decisive despite Ricardo Pepi's late strike in a game packed with chances.

PSV took the lead on the break, Couhaib Driouech racing on to Joey Veerman's through ball and unselfishly squaring for top scorer Til to tap in.

The pair combined again three minutes later as Til intercepted a misplaced pass, ran at the defence and fed Driouech, who poked horribly wide.

Ismael Saibari's effort was bravely blocked by Marc Pubill while Sørloth put a free header wide after meeting Álvarez's perfect cross seven yards out.

Driouech inexplicably opted to pass instead of shooting when unchallenged eight yards out and with his intended target Saibari several yards offside.

Atleti's Pablo Barrios fizzed a low drive just wide from 25 yards, had another effort tipped over then lashed a third high over the bar.

The equaliser arrived, though, when Kovar's pass played Yarek Gasiorovski into trouble, Giuliano Simeone closed him down and Sørloth laid on Álvarez's fourth Champions League goal of the season.

Driouech lobbed well wide under pressure from Jan Oblak before Kovar saved Sørloth's near-post blast.

Atleti led shortly after halftime when a half-cleared corner was returned with interest by Nahuel Molina and Hancko followed up Kovar's save to slot home his first for the club.

Sørloth soon doubled the lead, heading home Barrios' cross at the back post.

Substitute Armando Obispo denied Sørloth a second from Álvarez's square pass and two more newcomers combined to get PSV back in the game with five minutes left, Pepi with the finish after Ivan Perisic flicked on Veerman's corner.

Obispo missed a glorious late chance to equalise when he prodded Pepi's cross wide from close range.
