The Washington Spirit, buoyed by the efforts of Heather Stainbrook and Makenna Morris, beat the Chicago Red Stars 2-0 at Audi Field on Sunday.

Stainbrook opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a right-footed shot from the center of the box following a corner. Morris sealed the victory with an 83rd-minute goal assisted by Ashley Hatch.

Morris had two shots on target for Washington (17-2-6). Hatch was pivotal as well, taking five shots.

Chicago (10-2-13) struggled to find its rhythm despite several attempts on goal. Ludmila had three shots but failed to convert any before being shown a red card for violent conduct in the 72nd minute. Julia Grosso also made notable contributions with two shots but couldn't break through Washington's defense.

Both teams faced disciplinary issues. Rosemonde Kouassi of Washington received a red card for violent conduct just minutes before Ludmila's dismissal, leaving both sides down to 10 players.

Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher made 10 saves for Chicago but couldn't keep out all of Washington's relentless attacks. Aubrey Kingsbury had a quieter day between the posts for Washington, making two saves.

Substitutions played their part too. Trinity Rodman came off the bench in place of Courtney Brown in the second half and immediately impacted play with four shots on target that kept Naeher busy until full-time.

With this win, the Spirit solidify their position near the top of standings while the Red Stars continue to struggle.
