Utah Royals edge Portland Thorns 2-1
Led by Hannah Betfort and Mina Tanaka, the Utah Royals beat the Portland Thorns FC 2-1 at Providence Park on Saturday.
Betfort opened the scoring for Utah in the 47th minute with a right-footed shot from outside the box, assisted by Allyson Sentnor following a fast break. Just three minutes later, Tanaka doubled the lead with a header from close range after a set piece situation.
Portland's Olivia Moultrie converted a penalty with a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner. However, Portland failed to score again.
Shelby Hogan made seven saves for Portland (8-4-11), while Mandy Haught had three stops for Utah (6-3-14).
Up next: The Thorns face the Orlando Pride on Friday at 10 p.m. ET at Providence Park. The Royals will take on Seattle Reign FC at 5 p.m. ET on Oct. 13 at America First Field.
