Rose Lavelle extends Gotham FC's lead with a header in the second half.


NJ/NY Gotham FC, buoyed by the efforts of Esther González, beat Bay FC 5-1 at Red Bull Arena on Saturday.

Jenna Nighswonger opened the scoring for Gotham in the ninth minute with a penalty kick. However, Bay's Asisat Oshoala equalized in the 18th minute with a right-footed shot from the center of the box, assisted by Racheal Kundananji.

In the second half, Rose Lavelle put Gotham ahead again in the 70th minute with a header from close range after an assist from substitute González. Just two minutes later, González herself scored another goal via header following a corner kick assisted by Emily Sonnett. González completed her brace in quick succession with another goal in the 74th minute.

Cece Kizer added to Bay's woes by netting Gotham's fifth and final goal of the match in the 84th minute.

Ann-Katrin Berger made three saves for Gotham (14-5-4).

Bay (9-1-13) had several attempts to get back into contention but failed to convert their chances. Rachel Hill and Dorian Bailey each had multiple shots that were either saved or missed narrowly.
