Bayern Munich end Barcelona's 16-game winning streak

Bayern Munich rode a pair of early goals to a 3-1 win over Barcelona in front of a record women's crowd of 24,000 at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday in the Women's Champions League to end a 16-game winning run for the Catalans.

Strikes for the home side from Klara Bühl, Lina Magull and Lea Schüller gave Bayern an insurmountable lead before Barcelona's Geyse pulled back a consolation goal in the second half of the Group D clash.

Bayern turned the tables on Barcelona after a 3-0 loss in the reverse fixture, forcing the tempo early and causing a turnover in the first minute that led to a corner kick.

The early pressure gave Bayern the lead just four minutes in when Sydney Lohmann's cross dropped into the box for Bühl to send home with a touch off Barca defender Irene Paredes.

A neat attack from Barcelona followed, which saw Geyse force a strong save from Maria-Luisa Grohs, only for the hosts to grab a quick second in the 10th minute thanks to a low strike from Lina Magull to stake Bayern to a 2-0 lead at the break.

Barcelona came out strong to start the second half, but their lack of clinical touch continued to haunt them and Bayern claimed a third on the counter, with Magull teeing up Lea Schüller in the box. The Bayern striker, who had gone down several times in the first half, rose well in the area to head the third and leave Barca a mountain to climb.

Grohs, who had more than redeemed herself for a poor performance at the Camp Nou, was caught napping and Geyse stole the ball from her before striding around and slotting home.

Barcelona continued to press for another goal and save for an inch or two could have had another when Geyse's late effort slipped just wide but their frustrating night continued. Barcelona finished the game with twice as many attacks and almost three times as many shots as Bayern, but could not make that dominance count in the final scoreline.

It was the first defeat for Barcelona since losing to Lyon in the UWCL final May, and pulls Bayern level on points atop the group with two games remaining.
