Sevilla thrash Getafe after red card for rash tackle on Ocampos

Sevilla overcame a serious-looking injury to talisman Lucas Ocampos to beat Getafe 3-0 in La Liga on Saturday after the visitors were reduced to 10 men after a horror tackle by defender Djene Dakonam on the Argentine.

Striker Munir El Haddadi slotted home a delightful pass from Joan Jordan to break the deadlock in the 67th minute after Djene was shown a straight red card for treading on the left ankle of Ocampos, who was carried off the pitch on a stretcher.

Sevilla coach Julen Lopetegui and Getafe manager Jose Bordalas clashed on the sidelines in reaction to the foul and were both sent off, while the incident led to nine minutes of added time being played.

New signing Papu Gomez doubled Sevilla's lead in the 87th with a long-range strike that took a big deflection and striker Youssef En-Nesyri then added a third two minutes later. The win takes Sevilla up to third on 42 points, eight off the pace.

Lopetegui's side have won their last seven games in all competitions and the victory took them above Barcelona and into third place in the standings on 42 points after 21 games, eight behind leaders Atletico Madrid.

Ocampos was in tears as he came off the pitch writhing in pain.

"We could hear him screaming from the bench," said goalscorer Gomez, who came on as a substitute to replace the stricken forward.

Sevilla midfielder Oliver Torres added: "I saw his ankle completely twisted, but I think it was an unfortunate play, there was no bad intention. We hope he recovers as soon as possible."

Coach Lopetegui said he feared Ocampos had been seriously injured, adding he and his squad were "crossing our fingers" for their player.

Ocampos had been the outstanding player on the pitch before his injury and had a first-half goal disallowed for handball following a VAR review, which led to a heated exchange between Lopetegui and the referee at halftime.

Sevilla had been the better side before Djene's red card and were utterly dominant with an extra man, while they could have scored even more goals.

En-Nesyri put the ball in the net when the score was 1-0 but the goal was ruled out as team mate Franco Vazquez was in an offside position.

Moroccan En-Nesyri later tried his luck from long range and rattled the crossbar but eventually got the goal he had craved.
