Alphonso Davies brace takes Canada past French Guiana
Canada's teenage sensation Alphonso Davies scored two second-half goals as they won 4-2 against French Guiana to kick off the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup in Harrison, New Jersey, on Friday.
First-half goals from Scott Arfield and Dejan Jakovic had put the Canadians 2-0 up at the break in the Group A match before Davies, 16, took over early in the second half, outpacing two defenders before finishing coolly.
Octavio Zambrano's team looked to be cruising up 3-0, but French Guiana scored twice in succession through Roy Contout and Sloan Privat to set up a tense finish.
But Davies put the game out of reach with his second of the match, slotting home an Anthony Jackson-Hamel pass in the 85th minute to secure all three points.
Canada return to action against Group A favourites Costa Rica on July 11, while French Guiana take on Honduras.
