M'Baye Niang fires AC Milan into Coppa Italia quarterfinals

AC Milan advanced to the quarterfinals of the Coppa Italia by securing a 2-0 victory over 10-man Sampdoria at the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris on Thursday.

M'Baye Niang broke the deadlock five minutes after the break, beating the offside trap to run onto Carlos Bacca's through-ball and fire into the bottom left corner.

And things got tougher for Sampdoria in the 64th minute when Ervin Zukanovic received his marching orders for a second yellow card in a matter of seconds -- having said something to the referee, moments after being booked for a foul.

Bacca sealed the result in stoppage time, thanks to an assist from Keisuke Honda, after Samp had missed clear-cut chances to level.

In the next round, Milan will face relegation-threatened Carpi, who won at Fiorentina on Wednesday.

If Milan can win that, they will fancy their chances in the semifinals against the winners of the match between the two lower-division sides left in the competition, Alessandria and Spezia.
