Real Salt Lake stays with Freddy Juarez as coach, Elliot Fall as GM

Freddy Juarez was named the permanent head coach at Real Salt Lake on Tuesday and Elliot Fall was officially handed the general manager position.

Juarez, 41, was named RSL interim head coach in August after head coach Mike Petke was fired after a 9-9-3 start to the season and a two-week suspension for a homophobic slur toward an official after a July 24 Leagues Cup game.

RSL went 7-4-2 under Juarez to earn a third seed in the Western Conference playoffs. The team was eliminated by eventual MLS Cup champion Seattle Sounders in the conference semifinals.

Juarez started his coaching tenure at RSL first with the academy team before advancing through the system. He was a player with the second-tier Minnesota Thunder from 2004-07 and with the lower-tier El Paso Patriots from 1998-2003.

Fall has been with the RSL since 2007 going from an intern to a team administrator, to director of soccer operations and now GM after a role as assistant GM. Fall was named interim GM Craig Waibel and the team agreed to part ways one month after Petke was let go.

RSL also traded home-grown defender Brooks Lennon to Atlanta United for $300,000 in allocation money.

The 22-year-old Lennon, who has played for the United States' U-20 and U-23 teams, scored three goals with 10 assists in 86 games with Real Salt Lake over the past three seasons. He switched to a defender role before the 2018 season.
