D.C. United trades Eryk Williamson's rights to Portland Timbers

D.C. United traded the rights to U.S. under-20 midfielder Eryk Williamson to the Portland Timbers on Tuesday.

As a product of D.C.'s academy, Williamson was a homegrown player, but United general manager Dave Kasper told the Washington Post that they could not agree to terms on a professional contract.

The 20-year-old can now sign with the Timbers, who sent D.C. $200,000 in allocation money, a second-round 2018 draft pick and a 2018 international roster slot in exchange.

D.C. United will also retain half of any future transfer fee should Williamson move outside of MLS.

"Eryk is a dynamic young midfielder that has shown his abilities at the youth levels in this country, and his talents were on display this summer with the United States at the U-20 FIFA World Cup," Timbers coach Giovanni Savarese said.

"We believe Eryk is capable of further growth and development, and has the potential to become a quality player at the next level. He is a forward-thinking player and approaches the game with an aggressive mindset, which are traits that we believe will fit well within our group moving forward."

Before turning pro, Williamson played for the University of Maryland, where he scored 14 goals with 13 assists over three years.

He's also been a key member of the U.S. under-20 team and played at both the U-20 CONCACAF Championship and World Cup last year.

Also on Tuesday, the Oregonian reported that the Timbers had moved to acquire veteran El Salvador midfielder Andres Flores from the New York Cosmos.
