Orlando City SC acquire defender Carlos Ascues on loan from Alianza Lima

Orlando City SC acquired defender Carlos Ascues on loan from Alianza Lima of Peru for the remainder of the season, pending receipt of his international transfer certificate and P-1 visa, the club announced Thursday.

The deal gives Orlando City the option to extend the loan through the 2019 season.

Orlando City filed paperwork to obtain Ascues prior to the closing of the MLS secondary transfer window on Aug. 8, but a documentation issue held up formal approval and a waiver was granted from FIFA to complete the transaction, according to MLSsoccer.com.

The 26-year-old Ascues has scored five goals in 21 national team appearances for Peru, and he is expected to help shore up the defense. He has spent time on clubs in Portugal, Greece and Europe, in addition to South America.

"Carlos brings valuable experience from Europe and South America," Orlando City general manager Niki Budalic said in a news release. "He fits the profile we're looking for in a defender, and we also value his versatility to be able to play in the midfield.

"We welcome him to Orlando and look forward to his contributions."

Ascues was born in Venezuela but also has citizenship in Peru due to having Peruvian parents.
