Mexico beats Chile to advance to U17 World Cup quarterfinals

Mexico came from behind to defeat Under-17 World Cup hosts Chile 4-1 in Chillan on Wednesday and advance to the quarterfinals of the competition.

Chile had taken the lead through a Brian Leiva header from a corner in the 40th minute, but Mexico equalized just two minutes later, when Kevin Magana crossed from the left for Claudio Zamudio to finish.

After a first half in which the two teams -- playing a similar style -- seemed to cancel each other out, Mexico slowly exerted its authority after the break.

Midfielder Pablo Lopez netted Mexico's second on a strike with the outside of his left boot from 25 yards in the 61st minute and became the provider for the third when his cross from the left was turned in by Eduardo Aguirre eight minutes later.

Defender Diego Cortes completed the scoring in second half injury time, finishing inside the near post from a Nahum Gomez ball in from the right.

El Tri has defeated Germany and Argentina in the group stage and coach Mario Arteaga's side is now considered one of the favorites to win the tournament. Mexico will play either Russia or Ecuador in the quarterfinal in Coquimbo on Monday.

Mexico has previously won the U-17 World Cup on two occasions (2005 and 2011) and finished runner-up to Nigeria in the 2013 edition of the tournament.
