Club America, Monterrey book Liga MX Apertura semifinal spots

Club America and Monterrey advanced to the semifinals of the Liga MX 2017 Apertura on Sunday, joining Tigres and Morelia.

First-seed Monterrey overcame Atlas 4-1 on Sunday and will play Morelia, while Club America drew 0-0 against Cruz Azul and will face Tigres.

The semifinal first legs will be played on Wednesday or Thursday with the return legs next weekend. The Liga MX is set to announce days and times on Monday.

Club America's series against Cruz Azul finished 0-0 over the 180 minutes, with Las Aguilas advancing due to their higher final position in the regular season.

Cruz Azul had more possession in the second leg in Estadio Azteca, but America had the better chances on the counter in a hard-fought Mexico City derby.

First-seed Monterrey came into the game against Atlas already 2-1 up from the first leg and stormed to a 4-1 lead by half-time.

Rogelio Funes Mori opened the scoring in the 15th minute, with Carlos Sanchez getting the second goal and Aviles Hurtado the other two. Milton Caraglio netted Atlas' only goal from the penalty spot.
