Andre-Pierre Gignac to undergo Tigres medical after Marseille exit

Liga MX side Tigres UANL are set to pull off a major transfer coup after announcing that French striker Andre-Pierre Gignac will complete a medical on Thursday.

Gignac, 29, is out of contract after almost five years at Marseille and rumours that he was close to signing for Tigres began when the striker started following the club and some of its players on Twitter.

The France international has also been linked to the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, West Brom, West Ham, Lyon and Galatasaray, but Tigres appear to have won the race for a player who finished the 2014-15 season as Ligue 1's second highest scorer, with more goals than both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani -- 21 in 36 games.

If confirmed, Gignac's arrival would represent one of the most important signings in the history of Mexico's first division and the news follows Tuesday's announcement that 30-year-old Nigerian striker Ikechukwu Uche is in Monterrey to complete his move to Tigres from La Liga side Villarreal.

The club also signed Mexican prospect Jurgen Damm from Pachuca for a reported $7-8 million fee a week ago.

Tigres aren't considered one of Mexico's traditional "big four" clubs, but have a strong fan-base in the northern city of Monterrey and fill their 40-000-capacity Estadio Universitario for the majority of home games.
