England dominated for the first hour but then fell to pieces under pressure from a team chasing the game. They can point to the fact that Manninger should have been sent off, or that the free kick from which Austria scored was nothing of the sort but, in truth, England threw away a commanding lead against a team ranked about 80 places below them in the FIFA rankings. You have to admire Austria's spirit but that was two points lost for England.

Austria looked to be out of the game at 2-0 but a fantastic free kick, a poor piece of goal-keeping and a willingness to raise the tempo brought them back into it.
