Haaland subsequently withdrew from the Norway squad during the international break because of a groin injury and missed their European Championship qualifiers against Spain and Georgia.

"We spoke [on Friday] and he didn't feel fit," City boss Pep Guardiola said postmatch. "Of course we want to take a risk, this is an important game but we have Julian [Alvarez] and now we have a long week to recover. Hopefully next weekend [against Southampton in the Premier League] he can be involved."

City remain eight points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal with a game in hand after both sides won 4-1 on Saturday.
