Sundowns dumped out of Champions League after Horoya draw

The final three quarterfinal places in this year's CAF Champions League were decided on Tuesday, with South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns the big casualties as they missed out on the knockout stages.

Sundowns were held 0-0 at home by Guinea side Horoya, and with just a single victory in their six Group C games, the 2016 champions end a dismal continental campaign.

In truth, they created little in the game and stretched their barren run in front of goal to almost seven hours.

The best chance of the game fell to Sibusiso Vilakazi, who was teed-up superbly by the Uruguayan Gaston Sirino, but his shot from eight yards went wide of the goal.

Horoya put bodies behind the ball for much of the game and defended with good organization, thwarting Sundowns' increasingly desperate attacks.

Horoya join Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in the quarterfinals after they played to a 0-0 draw away at AS Togo-Port. Wydad had already secured top-spot going into the final round of matches.

Algerian side ES Setif grabbed second spot in Group B, as they won 2-1 away at compatriots MC Alger.

Akram Djahnit and El Habib Bouguelmouna had the visitors 2-0 up inside the first 27 minutes, but Alger hit back with a penalty through Walid Derardja just before halftime.

However, the visitors were able to hold on for what is a sweet victory for the 2014 continental champions.

TP Mazembe had already secured top spot in the pool and played to a 1-1 draw with Moroccan side Difaa El Jadidi in their final pool game.

Ben Malango Ngita had put Mazambe ahead with a late penalty three minutes from time, but El Jadidi managed to claw back a goal and grab a point in Lubumbashi as Houssine Khoukhouche equalised in injury-time.

Angola side Primeiro de Agosto also booked their quarterfinal place with a 2-1 home win over Mbabane Swallows from Swaziland.

DR Congo striker Jacques Bakulu Bitumb and Geraldo scored two goals in four first half minutes to send the home side on their way, before Quadri Aladeokun pulled one back for Swallows.

Zambian side ZESCO United and Etoile du Sahel from Tunisia played to a 1-1 draw in the other game in the pool. The latter had already sealed their knockout place.

In Group A, Al Ahly from Egypt and Esperance of Tunisia have already secured their places in the next round. They face Ugandan side KCCA and Township Rollers respectively later on Tuesday.
