David Villa leads New York City FC to first win, LA Galaxy earn late draw

David Villa had a goal and an assist to help New York City FC beat a 10-man New England Revolution side 2-0 on Sunday in its home debut at Yankee Stadium.

Villa and Ned Grabavoy connected on a give-and-go goal in the 19th minute. Villa took it up the left side of the field and touched it to Grabavoy, who fed it ahead. Villa split two defenders and chipped the ball inside the far post.

Patrick Mullins made it 2-0 in the 84th minute for New York City FC (1-0-1). Villa used some nifty footwork to create space and sent a cross to an open Mullins at the far post.

Jose Goncalves received a red card in the 66th minute after a takedown of Khiry Shelton just outside the penalty area. Shelton ran past the New England (0-2-0) defense to win a long ball from goalkeeper Josh Saunders.

The win was the first in NYCFC's brief Major League Soccer history.

Alan Gordon scored in stoppage time and the Los Angeles Galaxy tied the Portland Timbers 2-2 on Sunday.

Fanendo Adi scored twice, including a goal that came in the 90th minute and appeared to give the Timbers the win at home until Gordon's equalizer off a header.

Gyasi Zardes scored in the 65th minute to even it at one goal each.

It was Portland's second straight draw at home to start the season. The Timbers played to a scoreless tie at home last weekend with Real Salt Lake.

The Galaxy were coming off a 2-0 victory at home over the Chicago Fire in the MLS opener.

Portland saw the return of Diego Chara, who missed the opener because of a calf contusion sustained in the preseason.

Portland's start this season has been marked by injuries. Captain Will Johnson broke his leg last season but should return in the next three or four games. Diego Valeri, who led the team last season with 11 goals and 14 assists, tore his ACL in the final match and remained sidelined following surgery.

The match was accompanied by wild weather in Portland, marked by damaging winds and sheets or rain, along with a few bursts of sunshine.
