Tigres vs. Pachuca and Monterrey vs. Chivas were the best Week 4 games, both of which went down to the wire, but at the end both Nuevo Leon sides came out with important wins. Santos Laguna's Djaniny Tavares continues his impressive start to the Clausura; he already has six goals after four matches played.
Here are the Power Rankings for Week 4:
1. CLUB AMERICA (+1)
Miguel "Piojo" Herrera's America has yet to lose a game in the Clausura though its start to the new season hasn't been electrifying. Jeremy Menez and Andres Ibarguen will need to have an immediate impact because as much as Cecilio Dominguez tries to be the difference-maker, he's going through a rough time.
2. TIGRES UANL (+1)
Tigres and Pachuca put on one of the best games of the season so far and it could ultimately go down as the season's best match. Between the sides, they took 30 shots, 14 on target. Andre-Pierre Gignac got the winner in a game that saw Tigres lucky to walk away with the 3-2 win.
3. MONTERREY (+3)
Just like its hated neighbor, Tigres, Monterrey also had a hard game but managed to walk away with a 2-1 win from its visit to Guadalajara. For this match, Monterrey had Uruguayans Carlos Sanchez and Jonathan Urretaviscaya on the bench; few Liga MX clubs can equal that advantage.
4. LEON (-3)
No one saw Leon's 4-0 loss to Necaxa coming. Saturday's loss is a wake-up call because after starting the season with five goals in two games, it has gone goalless in its last two.
5. PUMAS UNAM (-1)
Lobos challenged Pumas on Saturday. The 1-1 draw was an exhilarating one but it was also proof that there are other players in the squad who can step up to the plate other than Nicolas Castillo. Goalkeeper Alfredo Saldivar made eight saves.
6. SANTOS LAGUNA (+1)
The positive results keep coming Santos' way even when it doesn't give the brightest of performances. In the first half against Veracruz, it had only one shot on target, however Djaniny's current scoring streak is impressive.
7. CLUB TIJUANA (+1)
There's plenty of reasons for Xolos to feel good about the start of the Clausura. The fact they've yet to concede goals is one of them but also managing to get two 0-0 draws from their visits to Cruz Azul and Monterrey. In the following weeks, they'll visit Santos and Pachuca, which will be excellent tests for Diego Cocca's squad
8. CRUZ AZUL (-3)
Cruz Azul picked up its third draw in the present season in its visit to Toluca, and once again newcomer Walter Montoya looked lost on the field. In his last two games, he has completed two key passes, zero accurate crosses and managed just one shot on target.
9. MORELIA (+1)
The fact that Queretaro played almost the entire match down a player allowed Morelia to get a 1-0 victory after taking 16 shots. Yet not every opponent will be as generous.
10. PACHUCA (-1)
Pachuca's only two losses this season have been by a final score of 3-2, which means that Diego Alonso's team has suffered two difficult losses. Against Tigres, if it wasn't for Alfonso Blanco's top performance, Pachuca could have conceded more goals. After conceding nine goals in four games, there's a defensive problem at Pachuca.
11. PUEBLA (no change)
In its 2-0 loss to Tijuana, Puebla completed 474 passes but only just one shot on target. The stats suggest Puebla has more working to do in the offensive end. Next up is a home game against Chivas, who will be looking to get their second win of the season.
12. TOLUCA (+1)
After its first win of the season against Atlas, Toluca was close on getting its first home win of the season in its match against Cruz Azul, but it ended with a 1-1 draw. If Toluca can't get wins at Estadio Nemesio Diez, it's season will be cut short.
13. CHIVAS (-1)
With a central defense that includes Carlos Salcido and Hedgardo Marin, there's not that much security in the back, which allowed Monterrey to get two goals in its visit to Estadio Akron. Chivas have played two home games and lost both of them, which should cause concern.
14. NECAXA (+1)
Necaxa's 4-0 win over Leon was a pleasant surprise. The game showcased that Necaxa has interesting attacking options, that's why striker, Carlos Gonzalez, finished the night with a brace. Unfortunately Gonzalez left the pitch with an injury.
15. QUERETARO (-1)
For a second consecutive weekend, Queretaro finished its match without shots on goal. Its attacking firepower is worrying right now, but next weekend, it will host Veracruz, a team that has yet to win a match.
16. LOBOS BUAP (+1)
In their visit to Pachuca, Lobos were lucky that their hosts didn't score more goals than the three that they put past Lucero Alvarez. Their daring style of play demands a lot of precision and at the moment, Lobos are committing a lot of turnovers away, which has led them to lose three games in a row.
17. VERACRUZ (+1)
When it looked like Veracruz would win its first match of the season, Santos won a penalty in the 91st minute. Djaniny Tavares scored his sixth goal of the season and Santos got a valuable 1-1 tie.
18. ATLAS (-2)
The arrival of Ruben Omar Romano as new manager didn't provide Atlas a fresh spark in its match against America. In the coming weeks, Atlas should begin to show some type of improvement under Romano, but the team is nowhere near reaching the Liguilla this season.
