Las Palmas given approval to sign free agent amid Samir Nasri links

Las Palmas have been given approval by the Spanish FA and La Liga to sign a free agent following Jonathan Viera's departure to Beijing Guoan.

Former Manchester City and Arsenal winger Samir Nasri is reportedly the club's top choice to replace Viera, according to La Provincia.

Las Palmas announced on Monday it had sold the Spanish winger to the Chinese Super League side for an undisclosed fee and its president, Miguel Angel Ramirez, said the club had already chosen a replacement.

"We are interested in an important footballer but we have to wait for La Liga to tell us if we can sign a player," Ramirez said at a news conference.

Las Palmas have since been granted permission by both the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and La Liga to sign a player outside of the transfer window.

"The RFEF and La Liga have confirmed to UD Las Palmas that it can sign a player to take Jonathan Viera's place provided it complies with FIFA and RFEF's requirements regarding free agents," the club said in a statement.

Nasri, 30, has been without a club since mutually terminating his contract with Turkish side Antalyaspor in January, five months into his two-year contract.

A move to Las Palmas would see the former France international return to Spain, where he made 22 league starts while on loan at Sevilla last season.

Relegation-threatened Las Palmas are 18th in La Liga, two points adrift of Levante, who hold the last position of safety heading into Saturday's game at Leganes.
