Kaizer Chiefs set up Soweto Derby semi-final in Telkom Knockout

Kaizer Chiefs have set up a mouth-watering Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates in the semi-finals of the Telkom Knockout after they edged bogey side SuperSport United 1-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday.

Chiefs claimed the quarter-final victory thanks to a stunning goal from right-back Ramahlwe Mphahlele, ending an eight-game winless streak against Matsatsantsa.

They were then drawn against Pirates in the last four, a quick chance for revenge after a 2-1 league loss to the Buccaneers late last month.

The other semi-final sees Baroka FC host defending champions Bidvest Wits, with the ties to be played on the weekend of November 24-25.

Chiefs were full value for their win on Sunday and also missed a penalty through Zimbabwean midfielder Willard Katsande as he had a luckless afternoon having hit the post as well.

Giovanni Solinas' side had a big chance early when Bernard Parker was played into space on the left-hand side of the box and, with just SuperSport goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to beat, saw his effort saved.

There was controversy on eight minutes when on-rushing Amakhosi goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune handled the ball outside of his penalty area as SuperSport United winger Aubrey Modiba attempted to lift it over him.

Referee Daniel Bennett ruled that it was not a clear goalscoring opportunity though and Khune escaped with a yellow when it might easily have been a red.

The home side came close to the opener when Katsande picked up a loose ball after a corner and rifled his shot against the post, the ball cannoning to safety.

After a hectic start, the game settled down in tempo, but the barometer was raised again seven minutes before the break when Chiefs were awarded a penalty.

Richard Boateng brought down Mphahlele in the box and the SuperSport defender could have few complaints over the decision.

Katsande, seeking a first goal of the season, stepped up to convert but crashed his shot against the crossbar this time, completing a luckless afternoon for the midfielder.

However, as the groans from the Chiefs fans were still ringing around the ground, they hit the front with a stunning piece of play.

The ball fell to Mphahlele on the right-hand side of the box and his first time shot from a tight angle had the beating of Williams at his near post.

The second half had nowhere near the same number of chances as Chiefs essentially stopped trying to go forward and sat on their lead.

SuperSport did not have the quality to take advantage of that, and were reduced to half-chances for Modiba and Thuso Phala, but little else.

It is a first win in nine games for Chiefs over Matsatsantsa, and takes them closer to a first trophy since they lifted the league championship at the end of the 2014/15 season.
