Bayer Leverkusen crash out of DFB Pokal to third-tier club on penalties

Bayer Leverkusen were dealt a stunning second-round exit from the DFB Pokal as they fell to third-tier Sportfreunde Lotte on penalties on Tuesday.

The minnows -- who were only promoted to the 3. Liga for the first time in May -- held on with 10 men to force the game to penalties at 2-2 and survived the shootout 4-3 despite missing their first two attempts.

Leverkusen took a 25th-minute lead through Kevin Volland but defender Roberto Hilbert turned the ball into his own net to give the hosts an equaliser two minutes into the second half.

Lotte's Tim Wendel was dismissed for a second yellow card, but the top-flight club could not capitalise until extra time when Volland delievered his second.

With a Bundesliga clash away to Wolfsburg on Saturday and a Champions League test at Tottenham next week, Leverkusen striker Javier Hernandez came off in second-half stoppage time, and Stefan Kiessling joined him on the bench after the go-ahead goal.

But Leverkusen were made to pay when Kevin Freiberger equalised at the end of the first session of extra time, and Lotte rallied from the spot to advance.

United States striker Bobby Wood scored twice as Hamburg cruised to a 4-0 win at third-tier Hallescher.

Wood found the breakthrough on the counter-attack in the eighth minute, then added a second three minutes before half-time with a shot through traffic from the top of the box.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga made it three by tapping home a rebound on 58 minutes, before Luca Waldschmidt made it four just seconds after coming on as a substitute for Wood.

Wood's fellow U.S. international Fabian Johnson was also on the scoresheet as Borussia Monchengladbach beat Stuttgart 2-0.

Johnson opened the scoring on the half-hour mark by running onto Andre Hahn's back-heeled pass, and Lars Stindl scored late on to double Gladbach's lead.

Mitchell Weiser and Valentin Stocker provided the goals either side of half-time as Hertha Berlin won 2-0 at St. Pauli.

Eintracht Frankfurt endured an 88th-minute red card to Mexico international Marco Fabian to get through a goalless 120 minutes and beat Ingolstadt 4-1 on penalties.

There were also penalties in two matches between second-tier sides, as Sandhausen got the better of Freiburg after a 3-3 game -- one-cap U.S. international Andrew Wooten on the scoresheet for the victors -- and 1860 Munich outlasted Wurzburger Kickers after a goalless 120 minutes.

Meanwhile, Arminia Bielefeld defeated Dynamo Dresden 1-0 thanks to Christoph Hemlein's 66th-minute goal.
