Arsene Wenger is at the top of the shortlist for the vacant presidency role at Rennes after the surprise departure of Olivier Letang on Friday, sources have confirmed to ESPN.
French outlet L'Equipe was the first to report the story.
Rennes are owned by the Pinaults, one of the richest families in the world who also own companies like Gucci and Yves St Laurent, and they believe their can convince the former Arsenal manager to join their club.
Wenger, 70, was recently named the new FIFA technical director but he always made it clear to the international federation that if a club offered him a good opportunity, he would take it.
The Pinaults would give Wenger the job of president as well as the role of sporting director, giving him what amounts to total control of the club. He has met Francois-Henri Pinault, as well as his father Francois a few times in the past and sources tell ESPN that he could make contact with Wenger as soon as this weekend to pitch him the job.
According to another source, there is interest in the position on Wenger's side.
Rennes announced on Friday that Letang would be leaving the club effective immediately and did not elaborate on the reasons why.
