Franck Ribery should not get France recall for Euro 2016 - Marcel Desailly

Marcel Desailly does not believe that Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery deserves a place in the France squad for Euro 2016.

Ribery, 33, retired from international football in August 2014 after missing the World Cup in Brazil with a back problem.

He has been out injured for much of this season but, having made a successful return to action for Bayern in February, Ribery hinted that he might make himself available for France duty again.

Earlier this month, Ribery said he would like to meet with France coach Didier Deschamps to see if a return would be possible.

But Desailly, who won the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship with France, cautioned against the idea.

"He's a super player but he gave up on the French team himself," Desailly told L'Equipe at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Berlin.

"No one forced him to. And now the team has been rebuilt without him. And he's 33 years old."

The ex-AC Milan and Chelsea defender said the question was now whether Deschamps "should sacrifice his plans" to bring back a player who earned the last of his 81 caps for France over two years ago.

Desailly warned that an injured player often returns in good form before suffering a relapse and that that "could happen at the Euros" with Ribery.

France will also be without Karim Benzema at the Euros after the FFF ruled him out due to off-field matters.
