Romania federation bans Astra Giurgiu coach Marius Sumudica for betting

Romania's football federation has fined and banned FC Astra Giurgiu coach Marius Sumudica for six months for placing bets on several domestic and international matches, which is illegal in Romania.

The federation said Marius Sumudica placed bets ranging from €500-900  ($550 to $990) on matches in the Romanian championship, the Champions League and the Europa League. The federation fined him 100,000 lei ($24,400). He can appeal.

Astra are top of the league, with 51 points from 26 matches, three points ahead of Dinamo Bucharest.

Astra chairman Petre Buduru told Romanian website onlinesport.ro on Tuesday that the club would fight to keep Sumudica and that it will appeal the ban.

Match betting by players and club officials is banned in Romania but is considered to be widespread.
