Former England international Faye White has said there should be more male referees officiating at this summer's Women's World Cup. "I don't see why it has to purely be women referees at the tournament," White told the Daily Mail. "That applies to the men's game too. "It is harder for women to break into the men's game because it is more saturated. But at the World Cup, it should be the best referee for the job. There are some brilliant female referees and some brilliant male referees." Manchester United Women's boss Casey Stoney also criticised the standard of refereeing at the tournament, and told the BBC on Saturday she felt officials were using VAR as a "comfort blanket." There are very few female referees at the tournament who have officiated in the top men's leagues. Bibiana Steinhaus has been a regular in the Bundesliga for two seasons while Stephanie Frappart became the first female official in Ligue 1 in April.
