Vincent Janssen could miss rest of Fenerbahce's season with toe injury

Tottenham striker Vincent Janssen could miss the rest of the season at Fenerbahce due to a toe problem, according to a source close to the club.

The Netherlands international, on loan at Fenerbahce from Tottenham, was initially thought to have picked up a minor injury during the 1-0 away victory over Bursaspor before the winter break.

But he has now missed 13 games in all competitions since being sidelined, with the source saying the injury is more severe than expected and that he is not likely to return until mid-April at the earliest.

Further scans revealed he has an edema on his right foot which is holding fluid, however the club doctors did not recommend surgery due to the risk of nerve endings in his foot being being damaged.

Janssen is walking again with the aid of an orthopedic boot, but is not expected to return to team training until the end of March at the earliest.

The striker is almost certain to miss Netherland's upcoming international games and the derby against Galatasaray next month.

The 23-year-old has scored just three times and has four assists in 13 appearances for Fenerbahce this season, but the injury blow has seen Fenerbahce cool interest in trying to sign Janssen on a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Even if Janssen makes a full recovery before the end of the season he may struggle for playing time with the in-form Fernandao and former Spurs forward Roberto Soldado ahead of him in the pecking order.

The forward is expected to return to his parent club at the end of the campaign.

The latest development marks another major setback for Janssen, who scored just six goals in 35 appearances for Spurs last season.

The north London-based outfit signed Janssen from AZ Alkmaar in 2016 after he scored 31 goals in 49 games for the Eredivisie side.

Fenerbahce are currently third in the Super Lig, two points behind leaders Basaksehir. The Yellow Canaries take on reigning champions Besiktas in the Istanbul derby on Sunday Feb. 25.
