England Women's Duggan joins Atletico Madrid

England international Toni Duggan has signed for Atletico Madrid after her contract expired with Barcelona.

Duggan, 28, has signed a two-year deal with the Spanish champions following a two-year stint with the Catalans.

"This is an amazing opportunity to play for one of the greatest clubs in Europe," Duggan said.

"I had several different offers -- from all around the world -- but at this stage in my career, I wanted to join a side that is consistently challenging for honours and Atletico's record is incredible.

"I have met both the captain and manager -- this is the next level for me, in every sense. They have great players and I want to help them to retain the league and to go further in the Champions League."

Duggan, who has also played for Everton and Manchester City, scored 29 goals in 72 games for Barca and helped them reach the Champions League final last season, where they lost to Lyon.

She has earned 71 caps for England and was part of the squad which reached the World Cup semifinal this summer.

Atletico have won the top flight in Spain in each of the last three seasons, but have lost two players -- Jenni Hermoso and Andrea Falcon -- to Barca during the current transfer window.
