Craig Goodwin's heroics off the bench have saved Sparta Rotterdam from a Dutch relegation dogfight.

The former Adelaide United winger notched two assists before scoring a smart 89th-minute free kick to seal a crucial 3-1 win over Go Ahead Eagles on Sunday.

Introduced just after halftime with the score locked at 0-0, Goodwin delivered a free kick that was nodded home by Austrian striker Martin Pusic just before the hour mark.

Sparta seemed destined for the drop after the Eagles equalised with 20 minutes remaining, but Goodwin set up Pusic again to take a 2-1 lead before burying the decisive goal himself.

The result, coupled with Roda JC's 3-0 loss to Vitesse, confirmed Sparta's safety in the Eredivisie next season -- the first time the club have played back-to-back top-flight campaigns since 2009.
