Corinthians Women break world record for wins

Corinthians Paulista Women have set a new world record after they claimed their 28th consecutive victory in all competitions.

The 1-0 success over Sao Jose in the second leg of the Campeonato Brasilerao quarterfinals secured a 5-1 aggregate win and ensured they broke TNS's three-year record of 27 wins.

Corinthians, the reigning Serie A1 champions, had already broken the national record of 25 successive victories with a resounding 6-0 triumph over Ponte Preta on Aug. 10 and clinched a 28th win in their run to secure the world record thanks to a 19th-minute goal by Millene.

However, they were indebted to goalkeeper Taty Amaro to ensure their place in the Guiness Book of Records after she pulled off a wonder save in the 89th minute. In this run, they have scored 96 goals and conceded just eight.

They last failed to record a win on March 21 when they lost 2-1 at home to Santos -- their first defeat since Oct. 3, which came against the same opponents -- and had won the previous four matches meaning it's 32 wins in 33 games.

Having broken the world record, Corinthians will now need to be wary as they look to extend it against Ferroviaria on Saturday.

Welsh side TNS had broken Ajax's 44-year record of 26 consecutive victories in 2016, but drew their very next game 3-3 after conceding twice in the final nine minutes.
