Boca Juniors beat Nacional on penalties, advance to Copa semis

Boca Juniors advanced to the Copa Libertadores semifinals after beating Nacional of Uruguay 4-3 on penalties in the second leg of their quarterfinal tie in Buenos Aires on Thursday.

The home side, which advanced 2-2 on aggregate, were down after 21 minutes through a Daniel Diaz own goal. Cristiano Pavon's timely strike in the 73rd minute evened the tie at the Bombonera but the jubilant Pavon was shown a red card for excessively celebrating his goal.

The Uruguayans, who had beaten Brazilian giants Corinthians in the previous round, could not capitalise on their man advantage over the final 17 minutes and the game went to penalties.

The sides were even 3-3 after 10 rounds before Felipe Carballo's shot straight at Agustín Orion set the stage for Federico Carrizo, who stepped up and fired the Argentines into the last four of the competition.
