Stenhousemuir secured promotion to Ladbrokes League One after beating Peterhead 2-1 on aggregate despite losing the second leg of the play-off final 1-0 at Balmoor.Michael Dunlop's first-leg double on Wednesday proved the difference for the Warriors, with Russell McLean's second-leg winner for Peterhead ultimately in vain.Stenhousemuir defender Ross Meechan cleared Jordan Brown's effort off the line in the closing stages of a first half that was short on chances.Hosts Peterhead dragged themselves back into the tie after 54 minutes when McLean headed home William Gibson's cross.The hosts were reduced to nine men - David McCracken received a second yellow card in the 66th minute and Jack Leitch saw red in added time - as they failed to find an aggregate equaliser.

Stenhousemuir take control of play-off final against Peterhead

Peterhead were made to pay for missing a penalty as Stenhousemuir took a 2-0 lead in their Scottish League One play-off final.Rory McAllister stepped up and blasted his spot-kick wide in the 43rd minute of the first leg and the home side took full advantage after the break.Stenhousemuir, who finished 22 points behind their opponents, went ahead in the 61st minute when Mick Dunlop headed home from a corner.Dunlop scored his second of the night - another bullet header - to seal victory for Brown Ferguson's men and set them up nicely for the second leg.

Stenhousemuir missed the chance to confirm their promotion play-off place after being held to a 2-2 draw at Berwick in League Two.All four goals came in the opening half and Stenhousemuir had to come from 2-0 down just to claim a point.Jack Hamilton smashed Rangers ahead with an effort that went in off the crossbar before Paul Willis slotted in a second.However, Andrew Dallas pulled one back with a header and then set up Colin McMenamin to level before the break.

Cowdenbeath search for a win goes on

Ladbrokes League Two basement side Cowdenbeath's winless run was extended to 13 games after a 1-1 home draw against Stenhousemuir.The Blue Brazil had not played since the end of November due to a cold snap but Cameron Muirhead warmed the hands of Stenhousemuir goalkeeper Chris Smith with a stinging drive.And, the hosts moved ahead halfway through the first half when Robbie Buchanan buried an effort into the bottom corner as Cowdenbeath took a deserved half-time lead.The home side looked on course for only their second league win of the season but Mark McGuigan was the quickest to react to Martin Scott's header, which came off the crossbar, to grab an equaliser on the hour-mark and condemn Gary Bollan's side to a third successive draw.

Livingston snatch late win at Stranraer to extend lead

Leaders Livingston left it late to secure a 1-0 win at in-form Stranraer.Liam Buchanan scored with six minutes left to extend Livi's lead to nine points at the top of Ladbrokes League One.Stranraer sit two points above the relegation play-off position after their first loss in eight games.Buchanan's strike was one of just four managed in the division on Saturday.Two of those came late on at Hampden Park as Queen's Park drew 1-1 with Brechin.City seemed set to move up to third after Andrew Jackson's 84th-minute strike but Ryan McGeever levelled for the hosts six minutes later.The only other goal in the division was scored by Iain Russell as Airdrie won 1-0 at home against bottom side Stenhousemuir.David Marsh earned a straight red for the visitors with six minutes left for a foul on Iain Russell.The win saw Airdrie move level on points with Brechin and East Fife but they remain outside the play-off places on goal difference.Second-place Alloa's four-match winning run came to an end as they were held to a goalless draw by third-placed East Fife while Albion against Peterhead also finished goalless.

St Johnstone 2-0 Stenhousemuir

St Johnstone ensured there would be no shock as they pieced together a comfortable 2-0 Scottish Cup victory over Stenhousemuir.First-half goals from Steven MacLean and Blair Alston killed off any hopes the visitors had of springing a surprise and the Premiership hosts cruised to victory.The League One strugglers will have been pleased to have put up a fight in the second period but there was never any real danger of Saints losing their grip on the tie and progressing to the fifth round.Stenhousemuir, currently second bottom of League One, suffered the worst possible start when Saints took the lead after just five minutes.Chris Millar delivered a pinpoint cross from the right edge of the box and MacLean ghosted away from his marker all too easily to head in from six yards.A Danny Swanson drive that drifted inches past in the 20th minute was the closest St Johnstone came before they added a second in the 32nd minute.Graham Cummins flicked on a high ball for strike partner MacLean and the opening goalscorer's back-heel teed up Alston to fire in from the edge of the box.Cummins should have added a third in the 70th minute as Stenhousemuir's resistance at the start of the second half began to wane.Alston's low cross from the right was perfect for the Irishman but somehow he scooped his shot wide from just six yards.David Wotherspoon saw a 20-yard drive deflected wide as St Johnstone looked to put some gloss on their win.Manager Tommy Wright introduced Liam Craig and Chris Kane in search of some fresh impetus as the game limped towards full-time.However, with Alston's injury-time volley being deflected over and Kane's shot on the turn being booted off the line, Stenhousemuir earned credit when they saw out the tie without conceding again.ends

Stenhousemuir off the bottom with win at Peterhead

Rory McAllister's own goal and Jamie McCormack's strike lifted Stenhousemuir off the foot of the Scottish League One table courtesy of a 2-0 win at fellow strugglers Peterhead. Stenhousemuir started brightly as Peterhead goalkeeper Fraser Hobday was forced to keep out efforts from Alan Cook and Mark Gilhaney, while at the other end Colin McCabe saved well from James Stevenson and James Redman to keep the scores level at half-time.McCabe was the busier of the two goalkeepers after the interval as he denied Nicky Riley and the home side's failure to take their chances came back to haunt them when McAllister diverted into his own goal from Cook's floated corner after 70 minutes.Hobday was able to keep out Colin McMenamin's free-kick, but could do nothing to stop McCormack, whose thunderous strike from inside the area found the top corner to ensure Stenhousemuir moved above Stranraer and into ninth, one place and one point behind Peterhead.

Stenhousemuir's recent resurgence hit the buffers as League One leaders Livingston won 4-0 at Ochilview Park.David Hopkin's crack outfit hardly need gifts, but led when Cieran Summers scored a comical own goal. The defender erroneously headed into an empty net past his goalkeeper, who had advanced to claim a long ball.In the second half, Raffaele De Vita crossed for Joshua Mullin to place just wide. The same combination made hay 20 minutes from time, though, as De Vita struck home Mullins' low centre.Liam Buchanan added a third with a powerful header from Jackson Longridge's cross and Dale Carrick put the final nail in Stenny's coffin with a drilled shot from Nicky Cadden's cut-back.

Strugglers Stenhousemuir stun promotion-chasing Airdrie in 5-0 thrashing

Bottom-placed Stenhousemuir stunned 10-man Airdrieonians 5-0 in the promotion-chasers' back yard in Ladbrokes Scottish League 1 on Saturday.The visitors forged ahead when Willis Furtado collected a poor Joe Gorman clearance and converted at the back post.Within a couple of minutes, David Marsh headed in a second from Alan Cook's free-kick.Matters worsened for the Diamonds when Daniel Boateng was sent off for a second yellow and from the free-kick Cook steered the ball into the bottom corner.Marsh netted from another dangerous Cook free-kick as Stenhousemuir pushed on after the interval. Carlos Martinez then fairly danced through the home defence to cap a staggering outcome.Leaders Livingston capitalised by extending their lead at the top to four points with a 2-1 win at Stranraer.Willie Gibson opened the scoring for Brian Reid's men after just five minutes with a rapier free-kick strike. Livi had to wait until the last 13 minutes to square things up, but Dale Carrick eventually nodded in from Joshua Mullin's cross.David Hopkin's men showed why they are top with a late winner as Raffaele De Vita was picked out by Joshua Mullin at the back-post.Peterhead and Alloa shared the honours in a 1-1 draw at Balmoor. The game came alive at the three-quarter mark when Fiacre Kelleher put the Blue Toon in front. Jordan Kirkpatrick levelled with 15 minutes left from a Jon Robertson ball.Queen's Park responded to a very early setback to prevail 2-1 at home to Albion Rovers.Striker Ross Stewart shot the Wee Rovers in front after just three minutes with a close range redirection from a Ross Gilmour cross.Ross Millen however levelled from the spot, and Paul Woods scored the winner with a long-range snapshot that goalkeeper Ross Stewart fumbled in. In the evening kick-off, Scott Robinson scored and was later sent off as East Fife boosted their survival hopes with a 1-0 win at play-off chasing Brechin, who saw Elliot Ford dismissed at the death.
