Newport hold Carlisle to draw in Keith Curle's last game as manager

Carlisle were unable to hand manager Keith Curle a win to mark his final game in charge of the Cumbrians as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Newport.Curle announced last month he was leaving the club after three-and-a-half years at the helm.Newport fought back after conceding an early Mark Ellis goal to equalise with Padriag Amond's 15th goal of the season. However, with both sides outside of the play-off picture, the result was largely academic.Carlisle dictated the pace from the outset, with Richie Bennett providing an early test for County goalkeeper Joe Day.A goal looked to be coming and it was duly supplied in the 14th minute by home defender Ellis, who found space in the penalty area to firmly head home Danny Grainger's corner from the left.Bennett was again on target with a low first-time effort which was dealt with by Day and Newport central defender Mark O'Brien was just off target with a glancing header as the visitors began to gain a foothold in the match.Newport drew level in the 38th minute when Amond got on the end of Robbie Willmott's cross from the right to plant a header just inside the right-hand post, with Jack Bonham in goal unable to react.Jamie Devitt almost restored Carlisle's lead two minutes after the break with a 25-yard free-kick that rattled the post with Day at full struggling to get across his line. The woodwork came to County's aid again in the 59th minute when Clint Hill met a ball from the right to send his header past Day, only to see it come back off the bar.

Luton secure promotion with point at Carlisle

A 1-1 draw with Carlisle was sufficient to clinch promotion for Luton, sparking wild celebrations amongst their 1,404 travelling fans at Brunton Park. The Cumbrians had threatened to spoil the party when they took an early lead through a Danny Grainger penalty, but Olly Lee snatched the vital equaliser for Luton in the second half.Carlisle started brightly and Hatters goalkeeper James Shea dealt with shots from Mike Jones and Jamie Devitt before the home side went ahead from the penalty spot in the 13th minute.Luke Joyce and Ashley Nadesan combined to slip the ball through for Richie Bennett who was tripped by Shea. Grainger sent the goalkeeper the wrong way. After a shaky start, Luton began forcing their way into the game and had the home defence at full stretch as James Collins flicked a pass on for Jack Stacey to test Carlisle goalkeeper Jack Bonham at the near post.Danny Hylton, Olly Lee and Alan McCormack all had efforts blocked in a chaotic passage of play in the Carlisle penalty area during which the Cumbrians also survived an appeal for handball, and just before the break Collins whipped in a low shot that flew inches wide via a deflection.Pelly Ruddock-Mpanzu flashed a shot across the face of goal as Luton came out for the second half looking to get their promotion push back on track.Luton grabbed the equaliser in the 62nd minute when Bonham made a good save from Hylton's 20-yard effort and Olly Lee was on hand to sweep the loose ball into the net from close range.Ruddock-Mpanzu further raised the hopes of Luton's travelling support when he was sent clear by Stacey only to be denied in a one-on-one challenge by Bonham. The same player again almost snatched maximum points for the visitors when his header spun up against the top of the crossbar.

Lincoln boost play-off hopes at Carlisle's expense

Lincoln boosted their hopes of securing a Sky Bet League Two play-off place at the expense of 10-man Carlisle with a 1-0 victory at Brunton Park.Matt Green's 16th goal of the season ended Carlisle's eight-game unbeaten run although the Cumbrians may feel hard done by after referee Robert Lewis awarded and then rescinded a second-half penalty. The Imps move up to fifth in the standings while the defeat leaves Carlisle five points adrift of the top-seven.Both sides contributed to a bright opening although it was the visitors who created the best chances with Jack Bonham twice coming to Carlisle's aid with smart saves.Lee Frecklington seized on a Matt Rhead knock down to force the goalkeeper into a one-handed save low down to his left then Green got power behind a 20-yarder that Bonham beat away.Carlisle had to wait until midway through the first half for their first effort, a fierce drive by Jamie Devitt which was turned away at the near post by Ryan Allsop. The breakthrough came for Lincoln a couple of minutes before the break when Neal Eardley's free-kick from just inside the Carlisle half caught the home defence sleeping and Green was able to run on and slip the ball past the advancing Bonham, finding the bottom left-hand corner.Rhead should have doubled Lincoln's lead in the 54th minute when Eardley's delivery picked him out in the six-yard box, but the downward header lacked conviction. There was a moment of controversy in the 73rd minute when referee Lewis pointed to the penalty spot after an appeal for hand ball in the Lincoln goalmouth. However the official changed his decision following a chat with his assistant and awarded City a free-kick.Carlisle midfielder Mike Jones was sent off in added time for a second yellow card after fouling Harry Anderson.
