Cape Town City set up semifinal with Sundowns in MTN8 Cup

Cape Town City set up an MTN8 semifinal against Mamelodi Sundowns after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday.

Defending champions SuperSport United will clash with Kaizer Chiefs in the second semifinal of the top eight competition which will be played over two legs on the weekends of August 25-26 and September 1-2.

City will host Sundowns in the first leg of their semifinal, while SuperSport will entertain Chiefs.

Youngster Keanu Cupido scored the only goal of the game for City, his first ever professional strike in just his second start, but in truth, it was a match with plenty of hustle and bustle, but little quality.

Cupido stooped to head home at the back post after Maritzburg goalkeeper Richard Ofori's weak punch was not sufficient to clear the ball.

The win came at a cost for City, who had skipper Thami Mkhize taken to hospital after a clash of heads, while new striker Siphelele Mthembu limped off with an ankle problem and winger Riyaad Norodien had to play on with a hand injury when the visitors had used up all of their subs.

Ayanda Patosi, playing his first game of the season, had set up Mthembu for two earlier half-chances, but the forward put both wide.

The best was when he found himself one-on-one with Ofori, but he lifted the ball over the bar with an attempted chip.

Austrian midfielder Roland Putsche flicked a header wide for the visitors, while the best chance of the game for the home team fell to striker Mohao Mokate, who put his header off-target with the goal at his mercy.

It is a third defeat of the season for Maritzburg, while City bounced back to winning ways after their disappointing away loss at Baroka FC in the league on Wednesday.
