Dortmund fans' response to Mats Hummels a catastrophe - Rummenigge

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has slammed Borussia Dortmund fans after they whistled former captain Mats Hummels upon his return to the Westfalenstadion.

Hummels, 27, made his competitive Bayern debut in Sunday's 2-0 German Super Cup win over Dortmund after completing a return to his first club over the summer.

The Germany centre-back had spent over eight years at Dortmund and was seen talking to his former teammates prior to the match and also visiting his old dressing room, but he received a hostile reception from many BVB fans, with loud whistles being heard throughout the stadium whenever he was near the ball.

"Nothing is so hard as man's ingratitude," Rummenigge told reporters after the match. "It's a catastrophe how Hummels was treated."

Hummels, who won two Bundesliga titles and one DFB Pokal with BVB, said he had anticipated the response from the home crowd.

"I expected it," Hummels said. "I've already said that I can totally understand it. I don't have any problem with it, it's just very emotional here."

Mario Gotze, meanwhile, returned to Dortmund this summer after three largely indifferent seasons with Bayern but was left on the bench on Sunday after having only resumed full training this month.

Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel told reporters: "It was not planned to play him.

"Our preparation was and will not be designed for giving playing time to those who have only just joined training but rather for giving playing time to those who have been training for four, five weeks."

However, Tuchel granted 22 minutes to Germany international Andre Schurrle, who like Gotze only joined his new teammates in training in early August.
