Liverpool players celebrate as Man City's Bernardo Silva urges UEFA to use VAR

On a night of thrills and spills, Liverpool survived an early tremble to eventually send Manchester City sprawling out of the Champions League and go hurtling into their first semifinal in a decade.

Poor old City attacker Bernardo Silva was left to rue what might have been, taking the time to congratulate the victors while also politely asking UEFA if they'd be willing to introduce video-assistant referees in the future after Leroy Sane's goal late in the first half was wrongly disallowed for offside.

"Could you guys start using the VAR next season?" the Portugal international enquired in admirably understated fashion. "It might be useful."

Oh well, there's always next year.

As you might expect, the Reds' celebrations were exuberant, with the majority of the winning team gathering in the Etihad dressing room for a brilliant postmatch team photo.

Mohamed Salah was obviously elsewhere.

The travelling Liverpool fans who made the trip to City's stadium were also still in fine voice when they arrived back on home soil en masse late on Tuesday night.

While Jurgen Klopp and his cohorts were left to sing and cavort the night away, City were left to think on what might have been.
