TOP STORY: Arsenal make move for Bayern's Boateng

Arsenal needed to improve their defence even before the season-ending injury to Calum Chambers, and Sky Sports Germany claims that Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng is of interest.

Boateng, 31, has slipped down the pecking order in Munich with the club happy to sell for around €15m. The Germany international already has experience of playing in the Premier League, having been on Manchester City's books from 2010-11.

RB Leipzig's Dayot Upamecano, Juventus' Merih Demiral and Barcelona's Samuel Umtiti have all been linked, but would cost upwards of €50m and Boateng is seen as a cheaper option.

The Daily Telegraph also reports that Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake is on the Gunners' shortlist, though Chelsea have a £40m buyback option in his contract.

22.13 GMT: Real Madrid have held talks with teenage Flamengo midfielder Reinier, sources have told ESPN. The 17-year-old Brazil youth international is being followed by a number of top European clubs and has also attracted interest from Barcelona and Manchester City.

21.26 GMT: League Two side Carlisle United have rejected a £500,000 bid from Everton for 17-year-old defender Jarrad Branthwaite, holding out for a bigger fee amid interest from Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Watford, the Mail reports.

20.39 GMT: On-loan centre-back Jesus Vallejo has left Wolves and returned to parent club Real Madrid, according to Sky Sports.

19.52 GMT: Aston Villa are keen on bringing in a pair of Chelsea players in January, the Athletic reports, with Danny Drinkwater (whose loan stint at Burnley has been cut short) and Michy Batshuayi (who's said to prefer to remain in West London) in their sights.

19.03 GMT: Club America have rejected a €6m offer from Real Betis for midfielder Guido Rodriguez, Mexican outlet Record writes, with the Mexico City giants said to be holding out for €10m -- a fee that Betis are reportedly unwilling to meet with the 25-year-old out of contract in the summer.

18.14 GMT: Accepting that Hector Bellerin is not the same player he was before his ruptured cruciate ligament a year ago, Arsenal have joined Tottenham, Everton and West Ham in the race for Norwich defender Max Aarons, according to the Mail, whose report suggests that the Canaries would be willing to sell the 19-year-old for £30m.

17.25 GMT: New York City FC have agreed a fee with Benfica to sign 22-year-old midfielder Keaton Parks after the U.S. international spent a season on loan with the MLS side, according to the Athletic.

16.36 GMT: Two of Chelsea's top transfer targets won't be going anywhere in January, with Goal writing that Borussia Dortmund will not sell Jadon Sancho -- reportedly the Blues' No. 1 transfer target -- until the summer and that Timo Werner aspires to win the Bundesliga with league-leading RB Leipzig and prefers to put off any talk of his future until after Euro 2020.

15.45 GMT: Hull midfielder Leonardo da Silva Lopes has been the subject of "a seven-figure bid from New York Red Bulls," according to the Hull Daily Mail.

Da Silva Lopes, 21, only joined the club from Wigan in the summer but has attracted the interest of the MLS side, though Hull have reportedly rejected their offer.

Jose Mourinho was asked at his news conference if highly rated 17-year-old Troy Parrott could and replied: "I think [it is] too soon. I think one thing is potential and another thing is conditions to express potential and I think he needs time.

"The next step for him is to sign a new contract at the club long-term and then it is for everyone to decide what is the best for is development. In this club we care about our players. It is also to find the best pathway to develop."

14.47 GMT: Ajax are reportedly out of the race, but Sky Sports reports that Napoli are interested in signing Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen.

Vertonghen, 32, is a free agent this summer but the Italian side want him to replace Kalidou Koulibaly, who is likely to move on.

14.32 GMT: Chelsea's interest in Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho has cooled, reports the Sun, because the club want a striker first.

Sancho, 19, would cost around €120m and Frank Lampard already has plenty of wide options, even though both Pedro and Willian's contracts expire in the summer.

Instead, Chelsea will look to find competition for Tammy Abraham up front, with RB Leipzig's Timo Werner and Lyon's Moussa Dembele the top targets.

14.15 GMT: Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster has been linked with a possible loan deal to several clubs, including Swansea and Leeds, but it seems he won't be going anywhere just yet.

Speaking at a news conference ahead of Liverpool's FA Cup tie against Everton on Sunday, manager Jurgen Klopp said Brewster "will be in the squad" to face the Toffees.

The England under-21 forward made his first Liverpool appearance in the Carabao Cup earlier in the season but the Reds are reportedly keen to loan the player out to a club where he will see more game time.

14.04 GMT: Tottenham's Christian Eriksen can sign a pre-contract agreement with any club now, but would he help Inter Milan to the title?

13.50 GMT: Burnley manager Sean Dyche has confirmed that midfielder Danny Drinkwater will return to Chelsea when his loan expires on Monday. 

The midfielder cost the Blues £35m from Leicester but has been a shadow of the player that won the 2015-16 title with them.

13.17 GMT: After losing Tom Heaton for the rest of the season after he ruptured his knee ligaments, Aston Villa need a new goalkeeper.

The Sun reports that Stoke and England star Jack Butland is keen on the job, with the 26-year-old keen to get back into the Premier League.

12.43 GMT: He was once being linked with Barcelona, but Jean Michael Seri's career took a dip when he joined Fulham and he's now on loan at Galatasaray.

Seri, 28, has been disappointing in Turkey but Aksam reports that Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has plans to bring him in this month to strengthen his midfield.

12.28 GMT: Jack Rodwell has signed for Sheffield United. 

Boss Chris Wilder said: "Jack has been with us for a couple of weeks or so now and he's been excellent around the place. He offers us versatility and experience in a number of key positions and adds further depth to the group which is important at this stage of the season."

11.39 GMT: Manchester City are getting upset with clubs for not playing their young loan stars, aren't they?

Having cut short Patrick Roberts' time at Norwich yesterday, sending him to Middlesbrough, City have now recalled forward Lukas Nmecha from his loan spell at Wolfsburg and sent him to the same club.

Just call Middlesbrough 'Man City Reserves' from now on.

11.26 GMT: Done deals everywhere.

Hull City have signed Liverpool midfielder Herbie Kane on loan. Kane, 21, said: "I'm looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead with Hull City. I've been excited ever since I heard the news that the club wanted to bring me in on loan. It was nice to come in this morning and meet the lads and it's great to be linking up with the gaffer again. It's nice that he has the trust in me to bring me here."

Borussia Monchengladbach have loaned Denmark U21 international Andreas Poulsen to Austria Vienna. The full-back has only made one competitive appearance for the Foals since joining from FC Midtjylland in the summer of 2018, and the Bundesliga club hope the 20-year-old will get more game-time in Austria's top flight.

11.13 GMT: Former Man City and Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell is close to joining Sheffield United on a short-term deal.

Rodwell, 28, was released by Blackburn at the end of last season and almost joined Roma recently, only for the deal to fall through.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder confirmed that a deal for the injury-hit midfielder could be close and Rodwell will hoping to play this weekend against AFC Fylde in the FA Cup.

AC Milan have endured a difficult first half of the campaign, with manager Marco Giampaolo, who had been appointed in the summer, sacked after just four months. The Rossoneri sit 11th in the table after 17 matches and the 38-year-old Ibrahimovic has been signed on a free transfer to help them back up the table.

"I am here to improve things, I have watched the squad from the outside," Ibrahimovic told a news conference. "Let's take it one match at a time -- there is a lot of quality in the squad. The results are not 'wow,' but it's a marathon not a sprint."

Ibrahimovic's return to Milan had been mooted for some time and the former Sweden international said he had been inundated with requests from clubs, despite his age.

"After my last match with Galaxy, [Milan director Paolo] Maldini called me," he added. "We spoke about how I was and about normal things.

"At 38, I had more requests than at 28. I was looking for the adrenaline inside of me, to ensure I get the best out of myself. I spoke to [Milan director Zvonimir] Boban a lot, then a month went by and after [the 5-0 defeat to] Atalanta, there were a lot of phone calls.

"I wasn't a difficult decision. In 2012, I left without my say-so, but that was the situation and I couldn't do anything about it."

Fernandinho, 34, is vital to the City midfield and although they've signed his long-term replacement in Rodri, he is still a key player. The Sun reports that City are ready to offer the Brazilian a new one-year deal to stay put.
