TOP STORY: Arsenal make move for Bayern's Boateng

Arsenal needed to improve their defence even before the season-ending injury to Calum Chambers, and Sky Sports Germany claims that Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng is of interest.

Boateng, 31, has slipped down the pecking order in Munich with the club happy to sell for around €15m. The Germany international already has experience of playing in the Premier League, having been on Manchester City's books from 2010-11.

RB Leipzig's Dayot Upamecano, Juventus' Merih Demiral and Barcelona's Samuel Umtiti have all been linked, but would cost upwards of €50m and Boateng is seen as a cheaper option.

The Daily Telegraph also reports that Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake is on the Gunners' shortlist, though Chelsea have a £40m buyback option in his contract.

Jose Mourinho was asked at his news conference if highly rated 17-year-old Troy Parrott could and replied: "I think [it is] too soon. I think one thing is potential and another thing is conditions to express potential and I think he needs time.

"The next step for him is to sign a new contract at the club long-term and then it is for everyone to decide what is the best for is development. In this club we care about our players. It is also to find the best pathway to develop."

14.47 GMT: Ajax are reportedly out of the race, but Sky Sports reports that Napoli are interested in signing Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen.

14.32 GMT: Chelsea's interest in Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho has cooled, reports the Sun, because the club want a striker first.

Sancho, 19, would cost around €120m and Frank Lampard already has plenty of wide options, even though both Pedro and Willian's contracts expire in the summer.

Instead, Chelsea will look to find competition for Tammy Abraham up front, with RB Leipzig's Timo Werner and Lyon's Moussa Dembele the top targets.

14.15 GMT: Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster has been linked with a possible loan deal to several clubs, including Swansea and Leeds, but it seems he won't be going anywhere just yet.

Speaking at a news conference ahead of Liverpool's FA Cup tie against Everton on Sunday, manager Jurgen Klopp said Brewster "will be in the squad" to face the Toffees.

The England under-21 forward made his first Liverpool appearance in the Carabao Cup earlier in the season but the Reds are reportedly keen to loan the player out to a club where he will see more game time.

The midfielder cost the Blues £35m from Leicester but has been a shadow of the player that won the 2015-16 title with them.

Seri, 28, has been disappointing in Turkey but Aksam reports that Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has plans to bring him in this month to strengthen his midfield.

12.28 GMT: Jack Rodwell has signed for Sheffield United.

Boss Chris Wilder said: "Jack has been with us for a couple of weeks or so now and he's been excellent around the place. He offers us versatility and experience in a number of key positions and adds further depth to the group which is important at this stage of the season."

11.39 GMT: Manchester City are getting upset with clubs for not playing their young loan stars, aren't they?

Just call Middlesbrough 'Man City Reserves' from now on.

11.26 GMT: Done deals everywhere.

Hull City have signed Liverpool midfielder Herbie Kane on loan. Kane, 21, said: "I'm looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead with Hull City. I've been excited ever since I heard the news that the club wanted to bring me in on loan. It was nice to come in this morning and meet the lads and it's great to be linking up with the gaffer again. It's nice that he has the trust in me to bring me here."

Borussia Monchengladbach have loaned Denmark U21 international Andreas Poulsen to Austria Vienna. The full-back has only made one competitive appearance for the Foals since joining from FC Midtjylland in the summer of 2018, and the Bundesliga club hope the 20-year-old will get more game-time in Austria's top flight.

11.13 GMT: Former Man City and Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell is close to joining Sheffield United on a short-term deal.

11.00 GMT: When Zlatan Ibrahimovic speaks, you listen.

AC Milan have endured a difficult first half of the campaign, with manager Marco Giampaolo, who had been appointed in the summer, sacked after just four months. The Rossoneri sit 11th in the table after 17 matches and the 38-year-old Ibrahimovic has been signed on a free transfer to help them back up the table.

"I am here to improve things, I have watched the squad from the outside," Ibrahimovic told a news conference. "Let's take it one match at a time -- there is a lot of quality in the squad. The results are not 'wow,' but it's a marathon not a sprint."

Ibrahimovic's return to Milan had been mooted for some time and the former Sweden international said he had been inundated with requests from clubs, despite his age.

"After my last match with Galaxy, [Milan director Paolo] Maldini called me," he added. "We spoke about how I was and about normal things.

"At 38, I had more requests than at 28. I was looking for the adrenaline inside of me, to ensure I get the best out of myself. I spoke to [Milan director Zvonimir] Boban a lot, then a month went by and after [the 5-0 defeat to] Atalanta, there were a lot of phone calls.

"I wasn't a difficult decision. In 2012, I left without my say-so, but that was the situation and I couldn't do anything about it."

10.45 GMT: Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could depart next summer -- with Barcelona and Inter Milan keen -- unless things change at the club. Will his new manager change his mind?

10.20 GMT: We know how important Fernandinho is to Manchester City, so it's somewhat of a surprise that his contract ends next summer.

Fernandinho, 34, is vital to the City midfield and although they've signed his long-term replacement in Rodri, he is still a key player. The Sun reports that City are ready to offer the Brazilian a new one-year deal to stay put.

10.05 GMT: Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has been linked to Real Madrid regularly and here's what Real boss Zinedine Zidane had to say today.

09.44 GMT: Lyon won't be selling Moussa Dembele (see below) but they are in the market for new players.

Boss Rudi Garcia told a press conference: "We lost two attacking players, so we are looking for someone there. We lost two full backs, so we are also looking for someone there. The January window is always difficult and it turns on opportunities."

09.28 GMT: Inter Milan have cooled speculation that River Plate defender Lucas Martinez Quarta will join the club in January.

Martinez Quarta, 23, is a target of Inter and reports claimed the Nerazzurri were ready to pay the centre-back's $22m release clause.

"In a club like ours, a player like him can be on our radar," Inter Milan vice-president Javier Zanetti told TyC Sports. "But I don't want to create false expectations. He is shining and there are many great clubs monitoring him."

The defender made his Argentina senior debut in September and has made 13 league appearances for River this season. He is tied to River until 2021.

08.54 GMT: D.C. United are in "advanced talks" with Liga MX side Morelia over signing Peru international Edison Flores, a source confirmed to ESPN on Thursday.

The 25-year-old attacker was a key part of Morelia reaching the semifinal of the 2019 Apertura, netting seven goals and providing four assists over the season. Flores has played most of his career as a left winger, but was often used last season at Morelia as a No. 10, or even a centre-forward.

D.C. United has been looking for offensive firepower this offseason, having lost Wayne Rooney and Luciano Acosta at the end of the 2019 MLS season.

08.32 GMT: West Ham are winning the race to sign Inter Milan forward Gabriel "Gabigol" Barbosa, according to Esporte Interativo.

Gabigol was a big hit at Flamengo while on a season-long loan from Inter Milan. Inter reportedly turned down a €16m offer from the Rio de Janeiro club for Gabigol, who finished as the top scorer in the Brazilian and Copa Liberadores competitions with 43 goals in 58 appearances.

In their offer, Flamengo also had allowed for Inter to have a 20 percent stake of the player's future sale.

According to the Esporte Interativo, Flamengo's offer was too low and Inter are now negotiating with West Ham, who are reportedly preparing a €20m bid to sign the 23-year-old. Gabigol, who is also a reported target of Crystal Palace and Chelsea, is tied to Inter until June 2022.

Inter signed the Brazil international from Santos in the summer of 2016 in a €29.5m transfer but after failing to impress with the Nerazzurri, he was loaned to Benfica and Santos before arriving at Flamengo a year ago.

08.00 GMT: Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Lyon's Moussa Dembele after the Ligue 1 side released a statement which said the forward is not for sale.

Sources have told ESPN that United have been interested in signing Dembele with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the market for centre-forward and having missed out on Erling Haaland.

However, Lyon have said they do not want to let the 23-year-old leave the club in January.

"Lyon have moved to reaffirm their desire, just as in the summer of 2019, to keep Moussa Dembele," a club statement read. "Lyon have complete confidence in Moussa and count on him as we build a powerful team for the seasons to come."

PAPER TALK (by Harry Kettle)

Manchester United set price for Pogba

Manchester United have set £150m as the price tag for any potential sale of Paul Pogba, the Daily Star reports.

The Frenchman has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford, despite still having 18 months left on his contract. Pogba is believed to have no interest in signing a new deal in the midst of great interest from Real Madrid and former club Juventus.

The Old Lady are the frontrunners to secure the signing and will likely put everything they've got behind bringing him back to Turin, whereas Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is adamant that he can get Pogba to remain at the club.

Meanwhile, The Times reports that Pogba's teammates expect him to leave the club this summer despite him having 18 months remaining on his contract.

Manchester United go after Cantwell

As reported by Daily Mail, Manchester United have entered the race to try and sign Norwich City star Todd Cantwell.

The youngster, who is currently contracted to the Canaries until 2022, has been turning heads since the start of Norwich's first season back in the Premier League. United will be joining Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in their pursuit of Cantwell over the next few years.

However, while they may be in the running, City could have the advantage as they've been tracking Cantwell's work for a few years now.

Inter Milan continue to pursue Vidal

As reported by Calciomercato, Inter Milan are continuing to pursue Barcelona midfielder Arturo Vidal as the January transfer window begins.

The popular midfielder has officially returned to training with Barca with the expectation being that he will feature against Espanyol this weekend, although that could well be his final game with the Spanish giants.

Antonio Conte wants to get a deal done in order for Vidal to spend the second half of the season with Inter as they continue their push for the Serie A title, with Barcelona currently valuing him at around €15-20m.

Tap-ins

-- Southampton are believed to be interested in signing Real Valladolid defender Mohammed Salisu, Sky Sports News reports. The youngster's buyout clause is currently only priced at €12 million which is one of the primary reasons why the Saints believe they could secure the signing. Alas, while it's a possibility, the club are more interested in putting the focus on bringing in a few full-backs.

-- Sheffield United have entered themselves into the race to try and sign Nice star Adrien Tameze, The Telegraph reports. The midfielder has also been attracting the attention of Southampton, Aston Villa and Burnley, although the Blades are believed to be leading the way and want to tie up a deal sooner rather than later now that the January transfer window is officially open.
