Betting update: Title race, top four, relegation, European leagues

We correctly called Son Heung-Min at 9/2 to score first against Sheffield United and had Liverpool as a banker in what was a decent weekend for the column.

The international break means a brief lull in the action, so let's have a look at how the latest round of results has affected the outright betting markets in Europe's major leagues.

Running total: +£25.40

Liverpool looking unstoppable

There might be two-thirds of the Premier League season to go, but Liverpool took a monumental step towards landing a first Premier League title with Sunday's 3-1 win over Manchester City.

The layers could barely separate them in the outright betting going in, with the Reds 4/5 on with bet365 to win a first domestic title since 1990 and Manchester City 11/10 to win what would be a third consecutive crown.

After a pulsating encounter on Merseyside, Liverpool made their statement loud and clear and are now 2/5 shots to win the league. Pep Guardiola's City, who are now nine points off the pace, have been eased to 9/4, and it will take a monumental effort from here surely to reel Jurgen Klopp's men in.

Foxes fix sights on top four

Brendan Rodgers said Leicester City are "not really thinking about the title race" after their 2-0 win against Arsenal, but the bookmakers are after cutting their title odds. The recent relentlessness of Leicester's form has forced the layers to act, and the Foxes are now 5/6 to finish in the top four. They've also had their title odds clipped to 33/1.

Saturday's 2-0 reverse at the King Power was Arsenal's fourth successive match without a victory and leaves them nine points behind Leicester in the Premier League table. Unai Emery might think he still has the support of the Arsenal hierarchy, but he is now no bigger than 9/4 to be the "Next Premier League manager to leave his post." Arsenal have been eased to 5/2 with bet365 to finish in the top four, and if recent performances are anything to go by, there won't be a big queue forming to get involved at that price.

What of Sheffield United? Saturday's 1-1 draw with Spurs means they are still unbeaten away from home this season. They've drawn 2-2 with Chelsea, beaten Arsenal and lost narrowly to Liverpool at Bramall Lane, proving they can mix it with the big boys. For the more optimistic punter, Chris Wilder's men can be backed at 150/1 to finish in the top four.

Down at the bottom

Norwich City are as short as 2/7 now for the drop following that devastating home loss against Watford on Friday. The Canaries seem to be wilting in the unforgiving pressure cooker atmosphere of the Premier League, and their form since that 3-2 win over Manchester City in September has been woeful.

The Hornets meanwhile are now 10/11 for the drop, with Newcastle United out to 11/4 following their come-from-behind win over Bournemouth.

To sum up Tottenham's current predicament, Spurs are 500/1 with bet365 to win the title but just 250/1 to be relegated. Ouch.

European view

It was a big weekend in Germany, where Bayern Munich put clear daylight between themselves and Borussia Dortmund.

The Bavarian giants went into the weekend as slight favourites for the Bundesliga, but after a 4-0 home romp in the Klassiker, Bayern are 4/11 on to win the league. Dortmund, who were second-best all over the park on Saturday, are 4/1 second favourites, with RB Leipzig into 9/1.

Finally to Spain, where Lionel Messi scored a hat trick on Saturday, including two magnificent free kicks, as champions Barcelona returned to winning ways against Celta Vigo in La Liga.

Real Madrid earlier defeated Eibar 4-0 to move first in the table, but Barca's result saw the Catalan giants reclaim the top spot on goal difference. The Blaugrana are now 4/9 on to win La Liga with Real Madrid still available at 2/1 with bet365.
