Stats: Messi hits 300, Ronaldo's season-high 8, Man United's record-equalling 9

An action-filled midweek was highlighted by Manchester United, who hit nine goals past Southampton, and Barcelona, who edged out Granada 5-3 (none of those goals were scored by Lionel Messi, strangely). Meanwhile, Juventus beat Inter Milan 2-1 (both scored by Cristiano Ronaldo, not-so-strangely), Manchester City and Leicester City won, while Liverpool lost their second consecutive game at Anfield.

By The Numbers has the best stats from the action --

Premier League

1

An unfortunate slice of history for Jan Bednarek-- during the 9-0 defeat to Manchester United on Tuesday, the Southampton centre-back became the first player in the Premier League to be sent off, give away a penalty and score an own goal in a single match.

3, 6

Since making his PL debut for Arsenal in August 2019, David Luiz has received more red cards (3) and conceded more penalties (6) than any other player in the competition. These three red cards have come in 46 PL games for Arsenal. In comparison, he was sent off only once in 160 PL games for Chelsea.

5

Wednesday was the very first day in English Football League history to see as many as five top-flight matches played with all of them won by the away side (the victors were Manchester City, Leicester City, Everton, West Ham United, and Brighton & Hove Albion).

7

During their rout of the Saints, Manchester United had seven different scorers (excluding own goals). This is only the second time a team has had seven different scorers in a PL match, after Chelsea vs Aston Villa in December 2012.

9

Manchester United's 9-0 win over Southampton was the fifth time they have won a league match by a margin of 9+ goals in their history. Their highest goal tally came in 1892, when they beat Walsall 10-1. Two other 9+ wins came in the 1890s.

In addition, this is only the third time ever that a side has won a Premier League game by 9+ goals, after United themselves beat Ipswich Town 9-0 in 1995, and Leicester City beat Southampton 9-0 in 2019.

9

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored nine headed goals in the PL since the start of last season. Only one player in the top five European leagues has more -- Robert Lewandowski (12).

13

Manchester City have won their last 13 games in all competitions, the longest winning run by a PL side since Arsenal between March-August 2002 (also 13). Incidentally, this run also sees Pep Guardiola tie his career-high winning streak, set in 2013-14 with Bayern Munich.

37

Liverpool have failed to score in three consecutive home league games for the first time since October 1984 -- 37 years ago. Their goalless run at Anfield currently stands at 348 minutes.

Coppa Italia

1100

Gianluigi Buffon played his 1100th match among clubs and Italy when he took the field against Internazionale. He turned 43 last week.

Copa del Rey

10/11

Barcelona continue their remarkable record in the Copa del Rey -- advancing to their tenth semifinal in the last 11 seasons. Their only elimination before the semis? Last season, when they lost 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao.

14

Granada's Aaron Escandell made 14 saves against Barcelona on Wednesday. That's the most in a match by a goalkeeper from a team in Europe's top five leagues in all competitions this season.

36

Barcelona attempted 36 shots against Granada (20 shots on target), their most in a single game in all competitions since at least 2013-14.

86

Levante advanced to the Copa del Rey semifinals for the first time in 86 years - it will be their first appearance in the final four of the cup competition since 1935.

Messi-Ronaldo watch

Messi had just the one assist (albeit a historic one), while Ronaldo helped himself to a brace at the San Siro in a good mid-week for the two greats.

8

Ronaldo has scored the most braces in the top five European leagues this season (all competitions), with eight.

300

Messi recorded the 300th assist of his professional career on Wednesday (259 with Barca, 41 with Argentina).
